Bottle-Bottom Turtles

Turn recycled plastic into colourful little turtles while teaching your child about ocean animals and how we can help protect them.

You’ll Need:

  • Empty plastic bottles
  • Coloured tissue paper or paper scraps
  • Glue
  • Coloured foam paper
  • Scissors
  • Marker or black pen

Let’s Make it:

  1. Cut the bottom off the plastic bottle for your little one, then let them fill the inside with bright tissue paper or colourful paper scraps to create a vibrant, textured turtle shell.
  2. Cut a simple turtle shape from foam paper with a head, four flippers and a little tail, then draw on a cute face and add little markings to bring your turtle to life.
  3. Glue the bottle-bottom shell onto the centre of the foam turtle body, press it to secure, let it dry and enjoy your bright, happy little turtle friend.

Did You Know…

  • Baby sea turtles race to the water the moment they hatch. They crawl across the sand using moonlight to guide them to the water — like tiny nighttime adventurers.
  • A turtle’s shell is part of its body. It grows with them, protects them and they can even feel gentle touches through it.
  • Sea turtles are amazing breath holders. When they’re resting, they can stay underwater for hours without coming up for air.
  • In the ocean, plastic bags and floating pieces of trash can look like jellyfish — a turtle’s favourite food. When turtles accidentally eat plastic, it can make them very sick.
  • Reusing our plastic is important because it doesn’t end up in the ocean where it can hurt turtles and other sea animals.

Why We Love It:

  • A sweet blend of creativity and learning, letting little ones explore turtles through hands-on art.
  • Encourages caring for our planet by showing how recycled materials can turn into something adorable.
  • Nurtures imagination as kids bring their turtle to life with colours, faces and their own tiny details.
  • Opens up meaningful conversations about animals, nature and how we can help protect their ocean homes.
