DIY Box Train: All Aboard !

Got a bunch of empty boxes lying around? Turn them into a choo-choo train! It’s a fun, hands-on activity that sparks creativity, keeps little ones moving, and makes the most of what you already have at home.

You’ll Need:

  • Large cardboard boxes (1 big one for the engine, smaller ones for train cars)
  • Paper plates or cut-out circles for wheels
  • Crayons, markers, or paints for decorating
  • Tape or glue
  • Optional: string or ribbon to “link” the cars together

Let’s Make the Train

1. Use the largest box for your engine. Cut out a square for a window and add a tall “chimney” by attaching a rolled-up piece of cardboard.
2. Line up the smaller boxes behind the engine. Each box becomes a passenger or cargo car!
3. To create the wheels, cut circles from paper or cardboard (or use paper plates) and tape them to the sides of each box.
4. Let your child help you to color the cars, add doors, windows, or even turn one into a “mail car” or “animal car.”
5. Once ready, your little conductor can hop inside the engine box and imagine driving through mountains and cities.

Why We Love It:

  • Encourages imaginative storytelling and pretend play
  • Builds gross motor skills as kids climb in, out, and pull their train
  • Fosters teamwork if siblings or friends decorate and ride together
  • Repurposes old boxes into hours of open-ended fun

Creative tips:

  • Make tickets for passengers and set up a “station” for boarding.
  • Add stuffed animals as riders in each car.
  • Decorate each box to match a theme—circus train, snack train or holiday express
  • Turn clean-up time into play—load blocks or toys into the train and “deliver” them to the right room.
