Paper Plate Polar Bear

Using simple materials, your kid can create one of the Arctic’s coolest animals while learning how polar bears stay warm and survive in frozen habitats.

You’ll Need:

  • 2 paper plates
  • White paper or cardstock
  • Googly eyes
  • Small black pom-pom (for the nose)
  • Black marker
  • Glue stick and scissors

Let’s Make it:

  1. From the first paper plate, cut out small U-shaped sections on both lower sides to create the bear’s front legs. Leave the middle part intact so it looks like the bear is standing upright.
  2. From the second plate, cut out one large circle (about half the plate’s size) for the head, two small curved pieces for the ears, and one small oval or half-circle for the tail.
  3. Glue the ears behind the top of the head, then attach the head to the top of the body, slightly overlapping it. Glue the tail behind the body, centered at the top.
  4. Cut a small oval from white paper and glue it near the bottom of the head for the snout. Add a black pom-pom slightly above the center of the snout for the nose, then place two googly eyes above it. Use a black marker to draw the mouth just below the nose and add a few small dotted freckles on each side of the snout.
  5. To finish, draw short lines at the ends of the legs to make the bear’s claws.

Did You Know?

  • Polar bears have black skin under their white fur to soak up the sun’s warmth.
  • They have webbed front paws, which help them paddle through icy water like powerful swimmers.
  • A polar bear can swim for days at a time, covering long distances between floating ice sheets.
  • Polar bears can smell a seal hiding under thick snow or ice from almost a kilometer away.
  • Polar bears have three eyelids — the third one acts like sunglasses to protect their eyes from the bright snow glare.

Why We Love It:

  • Combines creativity and learning.
  • Uses simple materials found at home.
  • Sparks curiosity about polar animals and their icy environment.
  • Promotes focus and patience as little hands carefully assemble each piece.
