Liquid Fireworks

A simple science experiment that creates a beautiful, colorful display right before your eyes.

You’ll Need:

  • Light-colored cooking oil (we used olive oil)
  • Liquid food coloring (2–3 colors work best)
  • Warm water
  • Tall glass or jar
  • Small cup
  • Fork

Let’s Make the Magic Happen!

  1. Fill a tall glass container with warm water leaving about an inch at the top for the oil. (We used warm water because it worked best for us — but feel free to experiment with cold next time)
  2. In a small cup add a few tablespoons of oil. No need to be exact — eyeballing is perfectly fine and little hands love to help pouring.
  3. Add 2 drops of food coloring per color into the oil (2–3 colors total works best).
Tip: Too much food coloring can tint the water too quickly, so less is more here!
  4. Stir the oil and food coloring gently with a fork. The food coloring won’t mix into the oil—it’ll just break up into droplets. That’s exactly what you want!
  5. Slowly pour the oil mixture into the glass of water. Pour gently so the oil floats on top, keeping the food coloring droplets suspended.
  6. Watch the magic happen! As the food coloring droplets fall through the oil and hit the water, they burst and swirl—just like mini fireworks.

What’s Happening Here?

  • Oil is lighter than water, so it floats on top—just like a beach ball floats on a pool. That’s called density.
  • Food coloring is water-based, so it doesn’t mix with oil. The drops stay on top until gravity (the invisible force that pulls everything down) makes them sink.
  • When the drops finally fall into the water a little oil sticks to them, so they drift slowly and burst into colorful fireworks.

Why We Love It:

  • It shows science in action and your kid can actually see how liquids behave differently.
  • Builds early curiosity about density and gravity in a hands-on way.
  • Super easy setup with things you already have at home.
  • The colorful “rain” effect is calming to watch.
