Moving Snowman Craft

This jolly snowman is more than just a cute winter craft—he actually moves. It’s a mix of art and hands-on play that’s perfect for snowy afternoons indoors.

You’ll Need:

  • 1 tall white paper cup (so the clothespin can swing inside without touching the surface)
  • A toothpick
  • A clothespin
  • White, black, orange and red paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Let’s Make it:

  1. Take one tall white paper cup and turn it upside down. Cut a rectangular slit on the bottom (which is now the top) of the cup — this will serve as the slot for the moving mechanism.
  2. Cut a strip of paper wide enough to fit through the slit. Place a toothpick through the middle of the strip to hold it steady — this will act as the moving mechanism. Insert the strip into the slit, keeping the toothpick on the outside of the cup (at the top of the inverted cup) so it holds the strip in place. Then attach the clothespin to the strip inside the cup, making sure it can swing freely when you give a little push to the other end of the strip.
  3. Cut a circle from white paper for the snowman’s head. Add two black eyes, a smiling mouth and an orange carrot nose. Make a black hat with a red band and glue it on top of the head.
  4. Cut two long strips of black paper with little branches at the ends to look like stick arms. Glue one arm on each side of the snowman’s body. Then cut three small black circles and glue them down the front of the cup for buttons. Finally, glue the snowman’s head onto the paper strip sticking out of the cup. Make sure it’s centered and secure so the head can swing left and right when you push it gently.
  5. Push the snowman’s head gently with your finger and watch him swing side to side like a jolly dancing snowman.
