What Dissolves in Water

Your kid will love testing which ingredients dissolve in water and which ones stay behind—it’s summer learning made simple and fun.

You’ll Need:

  • Uncooked rice
  • Dry pasta
  • Lentils
  • Salt
  • Brown sugar
  • Icing sugar
  • Water
  • Clear tray or bowl
  • Spoon or spatula for mixing

Let’s Make it:

  1. Fill a clear tray or bowl halfway with water.
  2. Add each ingredient one at a time and stir gently to see what happens—does it dissolve or stay the same?
  3. Talk about the results! Which items disappeared in the water and which ones stayed visible?

What is happening here?

  • When something dissolves:
It means the tiny particles of that ingredient break apart and spread evenly through the water, becoming invisible but still there! This usually happens with materials that are made up of very small, light particles — like salt, brown sugar, and icing sugar. Their tiny grains mix easily with water, forming a solution.

  • When something doesn’t dissolve:
It means the particles are too big or too heavy to mix into the water. Ingredients like rice, lentils, and pasta stay the same because water can’t break them apart. Instead, they just sink or float, depending on their weight and shape.

Why We Love It:

  • Turns simple kitchen items into an exciting hands-on science experiment.
  • Helps kids see cause and effect right before their eyes—some ingredients disappear, others don’t!
  • Builds early observation and comparison skills while encouraging curiosity and discovery.
  • Teaches real science vocabulary like dissolve, mixture, and solution in a playful way.
