Funny Bubbles in a Jar

Let’s turn everyday kitchen ingredients into a goofy little bubbling show your child will love watching.

You’ll Need:

  • A clear glass jar or cup
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt (table salt or rock salt)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Let’s Make it:

  1. Pour water into the jar until it’s 3/4 full — this is where all the goofy bubble fun will happen.
  2. Gently pour vegetable oil on top — it will float and create a beautiful golden layer.
  3. Sprinkle salt onto the oil and watch the bubbles do their thing. Each grain pulls tiny drops of oil down into the water, then lets them float back up like goofy little bubbles. Keep sprinkling to keep the silly show going!

What’s Happening Here?

Oil floats on water because it’s lighter. When you add salt, the grains sink because they’re heavier and as they fall, they grab onto little bits of oil and pull them down. Once the salt dissolves, the oil is free again and they float right back up!

Why We Love It:

  • It turns simple kitchen ingredients into a playful experiment little ones can actually see and understand.
  • Sparks curiosity and conversation: “Why are the bubbles floating?” “Where did they go?”
  • Quick setup and easy cleanup — perfect for busy days or last-minute science play.
