Meet the Tiny Germs

Not all germs are the same! Create colorful bacteria and viruses with playdough and discover how they look, how they spread and how they can affect our bodies.

You’ll Need:

  • Colorful playdough
  • Stitching thread, yarn, chia seeds, or other craft materials for details (optional)
  • A flat surface or tray

Let’s Make it:

  1. Use playdough to create different bacteria and viruses using a variety of shapes, colors and textures. If you need inspiration, visit Microbe Notes for real-life pictures and models of bacteria and viruses.
  2. As you build, talk about the differences between bacteria and viruses. Explain that many bacteria are helpful and live in our bodies, while other bacteria and viruses can make us sick.
  3. Finish by discussing how germs spread and how healthy habits like washing our hands, covering coughs, and sneezing into our elbow help protect us. For even more fun, pair this activity with our “See How Germs Spread” activity to see just how easily germs can travel from one person to another.

Did You Know?

  • Bacteria are living things. Many bacteria are actually helpful and live in our bodies, especially in our intestines, where they help us digest food.
  • Viruses are much smaller than bacteria. They can’t grow or reproduce on their own—they need to enter our body’s cells to make more viruses.
  • Your immune system is like a team of tiny superheroes. When harmful germs try to get into your body, it jumps into action—and after you’ve been sick, it can remember some viruses so it can fight them even faster next time.
  • Healthy habits help your immune system stay strong. Eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, exercising, and washing your hands all help your body fight harmful germs.

Why We Love It:

  • Develops fine motor skills while encouraging curiosity and observation.
  • Introduces basic biology and health concepts through play.
  • Expands vocabulary with new words like bacteria, virus, and immune system.
  • Makes science a fun family activity instead of something to be afraid of.
