The Power of Air

Can an egg fit into a bottle without pushing or squeezing it? Yes—if you let air pressure do the work!

You’ll Need:

  • 1 hard-boiled egg (peeled)
  • 1 glass bottle with an opening slightly smaller than the egg
  • 1 small strip of paper or tissue
  • A little water
  • Adult supervision

Let’s Make It:

  1. First, let your child try placing the egg on top of the bottle. Does it fit? Nope! The opening is too small. Let’s see if science can work some magic.
  2. Slightly wet the inside of the bottle and the egg.
  3. With your child watching from a safe distance, carefully light the paper and drop it into the bottle.
  4. Quickly place the egg on the top and watch as it vibrates and slowly gets pulled into the bottle.

What Is Happening Here?

Air is everywhere, even though we can’t see it! When the paper burns, the air inside the bottle gets warm and as the air cools, the pressure inside drops. The stronger air pressure outside gives the egg a little push — and whoosh, the egg slips right into the bottle.

Why We Love It:

  • Makes invisible air pressure easy to see.
  • Encourages curiosity and scientific thinking.
  • Teaches cause and effect in a clear, visual way.
