Breathing Lung Model

Have you ever wondered what happens inside your body every time you breathe? Let’s find out!

You’ll Need:

  • 2 small clear zip-top bags
  • 2 straws
  • Tape
  • Thick white paper (for the lung shapes)
  • Coloured paper (for the nose and mouth)
  • Markers
  • Scissors

Let’s Make it:

  1. Cut out all the pieces you’ll need: two long lung shapes from thick white paper, along with a nose and a mouth from coloured paper.
  2. Place the two drinking straws side by side and tape them together, making sure the flexible (bending) ends are both pointing outwards.
  3. Cut off the zip section from the top of each zip-top bag. Tape one bag securely to the outward-pointing end of each straw, sealing it well with the tape so no air can leak out.
  4. Attach the paper lung shapes behind the zip-top bags on the bending side of the straws. Then glue the paper nose to the opposite end of the straws and place the mouth just below it to show where the air enters the body.
  5. Invite your kid to blow gently through the straws, then breathe in and out. As air moves through the straws, the bags will fill with air and empty again, demonstrating how our lungs expand and contract every time we breathe.

Did You Know?

  • Your left lung is a little smaller than your right one to make room for your heart!
  • Your heart and lungs are best friends! They work together to give your body the oxygen it needs to run, jump and play.
  • Your lungs are soft and squishy—almost like two little balloons that fill with air every time you breathe in.
  • Trees help your lungs, and your lungs help the trees! Trees make the oxygen we breathe, and we breathe out carbon dioxide that helps trees grow.
  • Your ribs are like a superhero shield that protects your lungs while they work.
  • Inside your lungs are millions of tiny air sacs that help move oxygen into your blood.
  • You take about 20,000 breaths every single day and you don’t even have to think about it.

Why We Love It:

  • Helps your kid understand how breathing works in a simple, visual way.
  • Encourages curiosity about the amazing human body.
  • Sparks meaningful conversations about staying healthy and taking care of our lungs.
  • A budget-friendly activity using simple materials you may already have at home.
