Shape Puzzle with Craft Sticks

A simple, playful challenge that builds concentration, creativity and problem-solving skills.

You’ll Need:

  • Large craft sticks
  • Acrylic paint or markers (red, green, blue, etc.)
  • Glue
  • Cardboard or thick paper for the puzzle board
  • Pencil and ruler

Let’s Make It:

    1. To cut the window on each colored cardstock sheet, draw a rectangle 12 cm × 18 cm (or large enough to fit 5–6 sticks laid side-by-side horizontally). Cut this inner rectangle out so you have a frame.
    2. Center each colored frame on a white cardstock sheet and glue it down. You’ll now have four white bases, each with a colored border “window”.
    3. In each frame, lay 5 craft sticks side by side so they touch, filling the whole window like little fence boards. If your frame is taller, use 6 sticks instead (do this for every puzzle).
    4. On each set use the same color as the frame to draw a big solid shape—black frame – black triangle, yellow frame – yellow square and so on, making sure it stretches across several sticks to turn into a puzzle.

Why We Love It:

  • Reinforces shape and color recognition.
  • Encourages logical thinking and sequencing skills.
  • Builds hand–eye coordination through careful placement.

Creative Tips:

  • Try stars, hearts, or even animals once your little one masters the basics.
  • Try seasonal versions—like hearts for Valentine’s Day or pumpkins for fall.
  • Write your child’s name across the sticks and let them rebuild the letters like a puzzle.
