Montessori-Inspired Shape Board

A hands-on activity that invites little learners to explore shapes, match pairs and build early math skills through play.

You’ll Need:

  • Felt or foam paper (any colors you have at home)
  • Scissors
  • Velcro dots
  • A board, canvas or sturdy paper as the base

Let’s Make it:

  1. Cut pairs of shapes from felt or foam—circles, squares, triangles, hearts, stars, rectangles…
  2. Arrange one of each shape on your board and glue them in place to create the “match me” side.
  3. Stick Velcro dots on the board next to each glued shape and on the back of the matching loose shapes so your child can place, remove and match them again and again.

Why We Love It:

  • It grows with your child — start with basic shapes and add more complex ones as their confidence blooms.
  • A gentle way to introduce math language, like sides, corners, big, small, curved, and straight.
  • Encourages concentration and independence, making it a wonderful Montessori-friendly activity.

Creative tips:

  • Pick a few shapes and make shape families by cutting each one in big, medium, and small sizes.
  • Customize it for any theme — pumpkins for fall, stars and planets for space week, or whatever your little one loves most.
