Alphabet Hunt: Dig, Discover, Match and Learn

Let your kid digs through a sensory bin to find hidden letters, then matches them to the correct spots on an alphabet puzzle board.

You’ll Need:

  • Alphabet puzzle pieces
  • A shallow bin or container
  • Uncooked rice, dry beans, pasta, or another sensory filler
  • Small scoop or spoon (optional)

Let’s Make It:

  1. Fill the container with rice or your chosen sensory material.
  2. Bury the puzzle pieces in the rice, making sure some are partially hidden for easy starts.
  3. Invite your child to dig with their hands or a scoop to find the letters.
  4. As each letter is found, match it to the puzzle board and say its name (and sound, if you like).

Why We Love It:

  • It makes letter learning hands-on and exciting instead of just memorizing.
  • Encourages letter recognition and phonics practice.
  • It’s easy to set up and feels like a mini adventure right at home.
  • Builds confidence as your child celebrates each “found” letter.

Creative Tips:

  • Hide only a few letters at a time for younger kids.
  • Play “Find the Letter” by calling out a letter for your child to search for.
  • Use seasonal fillers like colored rice or fake snow for a festive twist.
