How Much Water Does Snow Hold

This simple experiment turns melting snow into an easy, hands-on science discovery.

You’ll Need:

  • 2 jars or containers
  • Snow
  • Water (for comparison)

Let’s Make It:

  1. Fill one clear jar with snow and in a second jar pour water to about the same height as the snow. Place the jars side by side.
  2. Let the snow sit and melt, then look closely at how much water is left.

What Is Happening Here?

Snow is made of frozen water with lots of tiny air spaces inside it. When the snow melts, the air disappears and only the water is left. That’s why a big jar of snow turns into just a little bit of water.

Why We Love It:

  • Builds early science and observation skills.
  • Encourages comparison and simple measuring.
  • Turns everyday snow into a learning moment.
