Paper Plate Narwhal

Your kid will love turning a simple paper plate into the “unicorn of the sea” while learning about one of the Arctic’s most fascinating animals.

You’ll Need:

  • Paper plate
  • Paint (any color you like for your narwhal)
  • Colored paper (for belly, fins and tusk)
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Black marker

Let’s Make it:

  1. Paint your paper plate in the main color of your narwhal (blue, purple, teal—anything fun!) and let it dry.
  2. Cut out a rounded shape from the plate to form the narwhal’s body, keeping part of the rim for the tail. Cut two small fins from the leftover plate.
  3. Cut an oval shape from colored paper and glue it in the center of the body as the narwhal’s belly.
  4. Cut a long, thin triangle from paper, color it with spiral lines using a marker and glue it to the top of the head.
  5. Glue on googly eyes, draw a smile and even blush cheeks if you’d like.
  6. Finish with fins & tail by gluing the small fins on the sides and shape the tail ends into two flippers.

Did You Know?

  • Narwhals are real animals often called the “unicorns of the sea” because of their long, spiral tusk — which is actually a giant tooth which can grow up to 10 feet long (that’s taller than most people).
  • Their tusk has millions of tiny nerve endings, letting them feel what’s happening in the water like changes in temperature and pressure  — like a built-in ocean detector.
  • Narwhals are shy and gentle — they rarely jump or splash at the surface.
  • They can live up to 50 years in the wild!

Why We Love It:

  • Teaches kids about polar animals in a creative, hands-on way.
  • Combines art, learning and fine motor fun all in one.
  • Encourages curiosity about life in the icy Arctic.
