Paper Plate Seahorse

A cheerful, hands-on way for little ones to explore ocean animals while paint and create their very own sea creature friend.

You’ll Need:

  • 3 paper plates
  • Yellow and green paint or markers
  • Googly eye
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil

Let’s Make it

  1. Paint all three paper plates yellow and let them dry completely.
  2. On the first plate outline the seahorse’s head and neck, then carefully cut it out.
  3. From the second plate cut out the back section and curved tail.
  4. Use the third plate to cut a rounded piece for the tummy and glue it onto the body. From the same plate cut and fold a fan-shaped tail fin, then glue it in place.
  5. Cut one long strip with soft, wavy curves—like gentle rolling hills—and color it green. Glue it along the back to create the ridges.
  6. Cut small oval shapes from white paper to make the seahorse’s belly scales, then glue them in a neat row down the center of the body for a lifelike look.
  7. Finally glue on the googly eye and your bright seahorse is ready.

Did You Know?

  • Seahorses live in warm, salty oceans all around the world — they love shallow waters near coral reefs and seaweed.
  • Unlike most fish seahorses swim upright — their bodies are shaped perfectly for gentle gliding, not fast swimming.
  • Daddy seahorses are the ones who carry the babies — they keep them safe inside a special pouch until they’re ready to be born.
  • Seahorses change color to match their surroundings — it helps them hide from predators or talk to each other.
  • They don’t have teeth or stomachs — they have to eat constantly, slurping up tiny shrimp and plankton all day long.

Why We Love It:

  • Encourages creativity, focus, and fine-motor skills.
  • Introduces kids to fascinating sea creatures in a fun, hands-on way.
  • Encourages focus and patience as kids assemble each part step-by-step.
  • Uses easy-to-find materials — no fancy supplies needed.
