Zippy the Zebra

Create this cute zebra while discovering one of Africa’s most fascinating animal through hands-on play.

You’ll Need:

  • 2 empty toilet paper rolls
  • White paint
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Black wool or yarn
  • Glue or double-sided tape

Let’s Make it:

  1. Paint the toilet paper roll with white paint and let it dry completely.
  2. Once dry, use a black marker to draw the zebra’s stripes. From another toilet paper roll, cut out an oblong oval for the face. Draw the nose, eyes and zebra stripes, then cut out two long ears.
  3. Glue the face and ears onto the roll (or use double-sided tape). Cut a few short pieces of black wool or yarn and stick them inside the top of the roll to create the zebra’s mane. Once everything is in place, your beautiful little zebra is ready for play.

Did You Know?

  • No two zebras have the same stripes. Every zebra has its own special pattern—just like your fingerprints.
  • Baby zebras are quick learners. They can stand up and take their very first steps just one hour after they’re born.
  • Zebras are very fast. They can run up to 65 km/h (40 mph) when they need to escape danger.
  • Zebras have amazing hearing. They can turn each ear in a different direction to listen all around them.
  • Zebras are great friends. They stay together in groups and look out for one another to help keep everyone safe.
  • Zebras can sleep standing up. That way they’re always ready to run if they need to.

Why We Love It:

  • Combines crafting with learning about zebras and their natural habitat.
  • Develops concentration, creativity and attention to detail.
  • Uses simple materials you probably already have at home.
  • Teaches recycling by transforming everyday materials into something new.
