Rain Cloud Dough

When it’s too wet to play outside, bring the rain indoors. This soft, squishy “rain cloud” dough is perfect for little hands to scoop, mold and explore.

You’ll Need:

  • 8 cups flour
  • 1 cup oil (vegetable, canola or baby oil)
  • Optional: a few drops of blue or gray food coloring or powdered paint for stormy “rain cloud” dough
  • Sensory bin or shallow tray
  • Small toys, cups or spoons for play

Let’s Make it:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and oil together using a hand mixer or spoon until it feels soft and moldable—like damp sand.
  2. If you’d like different shades, divide the dough into separate bowls and mix in the coloring or powdered paint for a variety of “cloud” tones.
  3. Pour your dough into a bin or tray and invite your little one to explore with scoops, cups or toys.

Why We Love It:

  • Promotes calm, focus and mindfulness—perfect for rainy, stay-at-home afternoons.
  • Simple, safe and taste-friendly—made entirely from pantry ingredients.
  • Inspires creative play that can easily extend into pretend worlds (like farms, weather scenes or small animal habitats).
