Paper Plate Walrus

Learn about Arctic life and discover how these incredible animals stay warm, strong and social in one of the coldest places on Earth.

You’ll Need:

  • 1 paper plate
  • Brown paint and a paintbrush
  • Yellow and white paper
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Let’s Make it:

  1. Paint the entire paper plate brown and let it dry completely. This will be the walrus’s face.
  2. Cut two small ovals from white paper for the eyes and draw black pupils. Cut two long tusks from white paper and one oval from yellow paper for the nose area.
  3. Glue the yellow oval near the bottom center of the plate, the eyes above it and the tusks hanging down from behind the yellow piece. Draw a small black oval nose at the top of the yellow part and add dots for whiskers.
  4. Use your marker to outline the tusks and add any extra details to bring your walrus to life.

Did You Know?

  • Walruses use their long tusks (which are actually giant teeth!) to help pull themselves out of icy water.
  • They can weigh more than 1,000 kilograms—that’s heavier than a small car.
  • Walruses live in large, noisy groups called herds and love to huddle close together to stay warm.
  • Walruses can slow their heartbeat to stay underwater longer and handle icy temperatures.
  • Despite their size, walruses are great swimmers and can stay underwater for more than 30 minutes.

Why We Love It:

  • Teaches kids about Arctic animals and how they survive in cold habitats.
  • Uses simple, affordable materials while inspiring creative expression.
  • The big tusks make it extra fun and give every walrus its own personality.
