Water Xylophone

Turn jars of colorful water into a musical instrument. It’s a fun mix of art, music and science all in one activity.

You’ll Need:

  • 5–6 glass jars or cups
  • Water
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Metal or wooden spoon

Let’s Make It:

  1. Line up your jars and fill each with different amounts of water.
  2. Put a few drops of food coloring into each jar to make it extra fun and engaging.
  3. Use a spoon to gently tap each jar and listen to the different pitches.

Why We Love It:

  • Combines music, art and science in one hands-on activity.
  • Teaches kids about sound and pitch in a simple way.
  • Encourages creativity and experimentation.

Creative Tips:

  • Play along to a favorite song.
  • Arrange jars from lowest to highest pitch for easy playing.
  • Try tapping with different objects (wooden spoon, pencil, chopstick) to see how the sound changes.
