Hammerhead Shark

Get ready to make a jaw-some ocean friend and learn cool shark facts along the way.

You’ll Need:

  • 1 paper plate
  • 1 kitchen paper roll
  • Blue paint or marker
  • White paper (for eyes)
  • Blue construction paper (for fins)
  • Glue and scissors
  • Red and black markers

Let’s Make it:

  1. Paint the top half of the paper plate blue and outline the rim of the plate with a thick blue border all the way around — this will leave the center white for the shark’s mouth.
  2. Paint the kitchen roll blue and glue it slightly above the top of the plate to form the hammerhead’s wide head.
  3. Cut two white circles for the eyes and use black marker paint to fill in the pupils. Glue one on each end of the roll.
  4. Cut three fins from blue paper — one for the top and two for the sides. They all are the same size, but make the side fins a little more rounded. Glue them behind the plate.
  5. Draw a big, toothy grin in the white space using red and black markers — fierce or funny, your choice.

Did You Know?

  • Hammerhead sharks got their name because their heads look just like a hammer.
  • Hammerheads need to keep swimming all the time to help them breathe.
  • Their eyes are on the far ends of their heads — giving them super-wide vision, but a small blind spot right in front!
  • Despite their tough look, hammerheads are gentle and shy around humans.
  • Hammerheads usually swim in groups (called schools) during the day — sometimes up to 100 sharks.
  • Even though they look fierce, hammerheads mostly eat small fish, squid, and stingrays.
  • Baby hammerheads are called “pups” and they can swim right away after being born.
  • Hammerheads love warm, tropical waters and often cruise near coastlines and coral reefs.

Why We Love It:

  • Turns simple kitchen materials into an ocean discovery project.
  • Encourages creativity, painting, and storytelling.
  • Perfect for little hands — easy steps and big creative results.
  • Promotes hand–eye coordination and focus while kids work on details like fins and eyes.
