Color Sorting Rings

A purposeful play activity that supports color recognition, fine motor development and early sorting skills.

You’ll Need:

  • Shoebox (covered with white paper to keep the focus on the colors)
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Cardboard (for the rings)
  • Yarn
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Let’s Make it:

  1. Cover the shoebox with white paper to keep the focus on the colors and reduce visual distractions.
  2. Color the popsicle sticks in different colors, making two matching sets. Cut small, evenly spaced slots near the edge of the box and slide the popsicle sticks into place.
  3. Cut rings from cardboard, color them to match the popsicle sticks and wrap each one with yarn in the same colors.
  4. Invite your kid to place each ring onto the matching colored stick and explore at their own pace.

Why We Love It:

  • Builds strong color recognition through clear, visual matching.
  • Encourages problem-solving and independent thinking.
  • Builds confidence as your kid successfully completes each match.
  • Easily adjustable in difficulty by crisscrossing the popsicle sticks.
