Paper Plate Seal

This adorable paper plate seal is the perfect mix of creativity and early learning — teaching kids about saltwater animals while they paint, glue and create.

You’ll Need:

  • 3 paper plates
  • Gray paint
  • Googly eyes
  • Brown or black marker
  • White yarn (for whiskers)
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape

Let’s Make it:

  1. Paint all three paper plates gray and let them dry completely. One plate will be the face, one the body and one for the flippers.
  2. Use one plate as is for the body — no cutting needed. On the other two plates remove the rim: one will become the head and the other will be used to make the flippers. Attach the head on top of the body.
  3. To make the flippers, take the third plate (the rim has been removed already) and cut it into halves. Glue both pieces near the bottom of the body to complete the shape.
  4. Stick on googly eyes, draw a small nose and mouth and glue short pieces of yarn for whiskers to finish your happy seal.

Did You Know?

  • Seals spend most of their lives in saltwater oceans, but they come to shore or icy beaches to rest, have pups and warm up in the sun.
  • Seals are very social and love to bask together on the ice under the sunshine.
  • Seals can hold their breath underwater for up to 30 minutes.
  • They can sleep underwater and float up for air without waking up.
  • Their whiskers are super sensitive and help them feel tiny movements in the water so they can find food, even in the dark.

Why We Love It:

  • Encourages creativity and imagination while exploring the saltwater animals.
  • Introduces early science learning about how seals live and survive in cold habitats.
  • Promotes focus, patience and a sense of accomplishment when finished.
  • Quick to prepare, easy to clean up and uses everyday materials.
